Curtis Mayfield - Sweet Exorcist (1974)

Photobucket

1: Aint Got Time
2: Sweet Exorcist
3: To Be Invisible
4: Power To The People
5: Kung Fu
6: Suffer
7: Make Me Believe In You

What needs to be said about this man? One of THE greatest vocalists EVER. Smooth, funky soul, sweet as honey strings, and well, I could go on all day, but you already know how fly this shit is gonna be. This album screams of the early 70s, the politics, the sound, and even the obsession with all things kung-fu. So whether you need an album to party on to Saturday night, or to recover to on Sunday morning, this could very well be the one for you... A classic.

Amy Winehouse - The Ska EP (2008)

Photobucket

1: Monkey Man
2: Hey Little Rich Girl
3: You're Wondering Now
4: Cupid

I've always had a soft spot for Ms Winehouses music, I remember first hearing her on the Wake Up To Wogan show on Radio 2, and at first thought she was an old soul singer that I'd missed out on discovering, but no, she's a tabloid-seeking junkie who happens to make pretty fucking awesome soul music. Here tho, Amy takes us on a trip to Skaville, with 4 covers of classic songs from the original ska era. Occasionally sounds like drunken kareoke, but its still a bouncing skanking little EP that you may very well of missed out on finding...

Dave Heroes says: A trip down nostalgia lane, with a pop twist, perfect for a party...

Mafia vs Ninja - Straight Outta Thirsk (2002)

MvN,Mafia vs Ninja,Mafia versus Ninja,Thirsk Punk,Deadbeat at Dawn,Lord Nelson
Self released demo / Choke On It Music Anti©

1: Back 2 Da Old Skool
2: Choke On It
3: Happy Addict
4: Why?
5: Kill You Bastard (Mr Bear vs. MvN) Remix

Recorded at the same time as …And Now The Screaming Starts… which were all supposed to be released on an album which we never got round to (story of our lives). Has a couple of real early tracks when we first started out 'Choke on it' and 'Happy Addict' a couple of later ones and even a bastardized remix 'Kill You Bastard' - containing mainly samples we previously used - created by another Thirsk hero, Mr Bear. Again manic, angry, energetic tunes - an ideal soundtrack for smashing up pretty much anything within an arms lengths radius whilst slamming around like an idiot. We had great times in this band and got up to tons of mischief: Manic hometown shows, BeatUp nearly getting beheaded, Broken down vans, blagging lifts on fancy tour buses, getting stopped in the middle of London because the cops thought we were terrorists, stealing Leftöver Cracks rider, banned from the Horseshoe in Portsmouth - lots of blood, chair dancing, Jez in Stockport, Robbo in Notts and many many more. We met some great people, loads of weirdos and played with some amazing bands...those were the days! Even features BeatUp's arse on the cover with his Thirsk tattoo - now there's dedication...

Mafia vs Ninja - …And Now the Screaming Starts… (2002)

MvN,Mafia vs Ninja,Mafia versus Ninja,Thirsk Punk,Deadbeat at Dawn,Lord Nelson
Self released demo / Choke On It Music Anti©

1: House At The Edge of The Park
2: Evil
3: The Last House on the Left
4: Outro (Shogun Disorder)

Brings back great memories listening the the Mafia CDs. A manic punk band featuring all the great Thirsk superstars including The Day of Heroes team. An energetic and eclectic mix of punk rock, rap and ska so we branded ourselves as Darkska Splatterpunk Rapcore whatever that ment; we were kinda a hard band to pin down and pigeonhole. All band members were into different stuff so we dumped all our influences in a big stinking pot and mixed it up to see what we could create. Initially Mafia had 4 vocalists which was pretty mental to begin with but after BeatUp's departure we settled on 3 for a while. Only 3 vocalists!? This CD was self released just to get it out there so it's pretty hard to find and reflects MvN's old school horror fixation with the likes of the 'House' tunes which were just plain hard punk rock; 'Evil'- MvN's ska anthem which starts with one of the best samples ever (taken from The Hammer House of Horrors series) and always used to get the kids toes tapping and bouncing around and 'Outro' a nice little instrumental with samples taken from Shogun Assassin....Check out the MvN Krew and see what all the cool kids were listening to in 2002!

Four Letter Word - Words That Burn EP (1995)

Photobucket

1: Rich White Ghetto
2: Call Off The Dogs
3: Fundamentally Flawed
4: Shelf Life

This is a right treat. Welly, from Artcore fanzine fame, fronts this melodic hardcore punk rock band from Wales. Blazing hooks, great manly yet melodic vocals, and enough power to make you feel like He-Man. Or Something. Some real punk rock, drawing influences from the old UK greats like SLF, and mixing it up with some good ol'USA hardcore punk, and adding a twist of crunchy pop punk. Politically charged lyrics, with a personal touch to them, and choruses you'll be singing along to in no time at all. Just fucking great, it really is...

Freefall - 7" (1993)

Freefall,Lookout Records,Redemption Records,Punk
Redemption Records / red-013-7 / White Vinyl

1: On and On
2: Never Had

Like Engage I first heard these on Lookout's 'Can of Pork' compilation. They had a great track on there called 'Other Day'. Apart from that track and the two on this 7" I don't know if they released anything else which is a shame as they were a great power pop punk band with that definate rough-round-the-edges early 90's Berkeley sound (if anyone knows more info on the band - feel free to leave comments). It's uncomplicated, innocent and catchy as hell with great vocals. Label mates with Engage on Redemption, Freefall were yet another one of those inconspicuous bands that faded away without gaining the popularity they deserved. This record came on a nice white vinyl which is always a nice bonus...If you like your pop punk uplifting without the cheese then grab a slice of this - you won't be disappointed...enjoy.

Dave Heroes Says: If you like these check out Brody which features vocalist Keith Cucuzza after Freefall disbanded.

4. More Alone With You
5. New Worlds
6. Eliminate
7. An Advertisement
8. Run
9. Absurd
10. Rote
11. Without
12. Just Plain Evil

This was another firm favourite in Shrimp's smoke-laden bedroom circa 1992. Alloy features former members of Articles of Faith and Dag Nasty but is a much more restrained and chilled affair than aforementioned bands but still retains the passion and power. Some great great tunes on here which are perfect for daydreaming in your own little world whilst the rain batters the grim grey world outside. Right from the start the thumping drums and fat baseline thunders into action and you just know this is gonna be good. 'More Alone With You' is one awesome track - it starts off nice and chilled with a tight riff which just builds and builds - my only criticism is it ends too soon. Bondi's vocals are unmistakable and this has to be one of his finest moments fer sure - a solid performance. I love this album and again like many others it's kinda fallen into obscurity and often overlooked. Not a great album cover but one hell of a great album!

1: "They Don't Leak"
2: "Hideous Ugly Place"
3: The Cramps - Surfin' Dead
4: "Like This Job?"
5: 45 Grave - Partytime (Zombie Version)
6: "It Worked In The Movie"
7: T.S.O.L - Nothing For You
8: "Its A Way Of Life"

10: "You're Not Alive"
11: Roky Erickson - Burn The Flames
12: "Rigermortus"

14: "Send More Paramedics"
15: Tall Boys - Take A Walk
16: "Swallowed Up"
17: The Black Berries - Love Under Will
18: "Trash's Fantasy"
19: SSQ - Trash's Theme
20: "Let Me Eat Your Brains"
21: SSQ - Tonight (We'll Make Love Until We Die)
22: "Contingency Plan"
23: Francis Haines - The Trioxin Theme (Main Theme)

A great cheesey zombie film, and a great cheesey soundtrack. A good mix of punk, psychobilly, metal rock and new wave, all from the mid 80s, so you know it's gonna rock, plus its full of movie dialogue, featuring some pretty iconic lines (tracks 14 and 20 in particular)... The Cramps and SSQ provide the best tracks on here, but Roky Erickson and The Damned follow not far behind. The rest is kinda fun and dumb, just like the film, and perfect for Halloween parties and the likes...

Engage - Empowerment (1993)

Photobucket
Redemption Records RED012-1 / Red Vinyl / US

1: Hard
2: Division
3: Inward
4: Final Paradox
5: Fingers of Fear
6: Success
7: Defence
8: Song Zero

First heard these on Lookout's legendary 'Can of Pork' compilation LP and really got into their epic tune 'Evolution'. When I saw they'd released an album a year later I snapped it up straight away. This LP is so underrated it's not even funny. You look on the net to try and find any info and it's impossible, seriously - no reviews, no pics, no nothing - it's almost as though it didn't exist! Ok, so this elusive band release 8 solid tracks clocking in at a little over 40 mins - the longest track being 8 minutes long! But that's what they do and they do it extremely well. It's an eclectic mix of gruff vocals and soaring sugar-coated backing harmonies which musically is sometimes slow, sometimes fast, has intricate guitar riffage, and even has some ska thrown in for good measure (Final Paradox). The album finishes with 'Song Zero' - an oh so nice instrumental totally different from all the previous tracks and makes you feel all sentimental and gooey inside. Empowerment is original, it's epic, it's mega political, it's thought provoking, it's awesome, it's here to download for you to judge yourself! Why this band didn't receive credit they deserved I'll never know! Oh yeah, great cover and was released on a nice slab of red wax...

Dave Heroes Says: A great album you've never heard...until now...

12: 100K
13: Player Hater Anthem

One of my favourite albums of recent years - yes siree! Featuring Dave Hause of Paint it Black fame and the former bassist for Kid Dynamite this is upbeat tuneful sing-along punk at it's very best. Think None More Black rather than Paint it Black - less hardcore - more hooks and melodies and it works a treat! 'Jane' is a fuckin winner of a tune and will have yer head bopping like some retarded pigeon. Nearly every track on here is awesome, solid and catchy as hell - if you've not heard these dudes yet I strongly suggest you do - they may well become your new favourite band.

Another Depthcharge gamble purchase here back in '92 after noticing on the LP they were label mates with 411. Clean-cut So-cal/Westbeach sounding sxe hardcore featuring members of 411, Farside, Ignite, NFAA etc. This isn't groundbreaking to say the least but it's definately worth having if you're into the nicer, more melodic sound of hardcore. It's another one of those incestual bands that released one album then disappeared into oblivion with the usual suspects moving on to pursue other projects. Kicks off with 'Time Divides' which is a really great fast paced number; along with the tune 'If Only I' are the stand-out tracks on here for me. I like this LP - it's soothing hardcore yer nanna wouldn't mind dozing to on a Sunday afternoon. Zzzzzzzzzz

3: Two Feet
4: Stronger
5: Only A Phase
6: One Chance
7: With A Gun
8: Common Thread
9: Truth Of Today
10: Victim Of Yourself

The second punk band I ever got into and Spermbirds 3rd studio album. I remember doing a tape swap with a German exchange pupil whilst still at school - I taped him Bad Religion 'No Control' and in return I received 'Common Thread' - from then on I became a big Spermbirds fan and so did the rest of the Thirsk punkers. I'll always have a major soft spot for this LP - even though I love the other Spermbirds LPs - this one just seems fuller, heavier - more solid and complete. Lee Hollis' vocals are still pissed-off and angry but musically it's a much more mature and well structured affair than previous releases. 'Only a Phase' is my stand out track on here - the way it builds is class and the individual instrument breakdown towards the end always seems puts a smile on me cheeky face - Yee-hah! Also the cover is great too - can't forget the cover...

Homebrew
13: Dull & Duller
14: Why Don't You
15: Climax
Filter Thrust
16: Let Go
17: Penetration
18: Star Lover

This comp featured a whole bunch of bands that gigged with, and hung out a lot together. One of the best punk rock years of my life... It was put out by Dave from Homebrew, and one of his mates. Hulls very own Freaks Union kick things off, giving an early taste to their ever evolving sound. Punk rock, like early Rancid meets the Misfits... Speedurchin deliver the next tracks, Snuff, Ramones, melodic punk rock at hyper speed. Next we got Thirsk ska-punk legends The Write Offs, with their second line up (no Aaron on vox, Katy joined on sax). Mutt follow with their raw rough street punk, SLF meets the Blitz. Homebrew are next, more punk rock from these old but loveable punk rockers. Filter Thrust close the CD, and they're shit. Honestly. A great reminder of what the Thirsk/Harrogate/Hull/Leeds punk posse were sounding like back then...

Dave Heroes says: Its probably best to stop playing this after track 15... Other than that good times, great memories...

Eek-A-Mouse - Wa-Do-Dem LP (1982)

1: Ganja Smuggling
2: I Will Never Leave My Love
3: Lonesome Journey
4: Long Time Ago
5: Noahs Ark
6: Operation Eradication
7: Slowly But Surely
8: There's A Girl In My Life
9: Too Young To Understand
10: Wa-Do-Dem
11: Ganja Smuggling (Live)
12: Police In Helicopter

This one is for all the tokers out there... Eek-A-Mouse treats us to more boucey, fun, and occasionally serious reggae, with his unique vocal stylings. All the major reggae food groups are represented: Weed, women, peace, and oppression, and this album will leave you feeling fat and fully satisfied. If you've heard Eek-A-Mouse before you'll know what to expect from his singing, every now and then he goes into weird 'b-oing, dum diddy dum dum' vocal noises, whether he does this because he's forgotton the words after way too much of the herb, or because he knows its strangely catchy, is anyones guess. When I went to Jamaica I only found one guy who had heard of him (for being the home of reggae, most locals only seem to know Bob Marley), anyway, he was a shop keeper, and as I was talking to him, he held his hand up to his face like he was holding a mic, and started mimmicking Eek-A-Mouses weird noises. It was a rad moment, very funny. At least to me. Some really great reggae tracks on here, Police In Helicopter & Wa-do-dem being some of the stand out tracks, but the best one on here, is world wide weed smokers anthem 'Ganja Smuggling' which could very well be one of the most awesome reggae songs ever, there's even a live version on here - I'm not usually a fan of live songs on albums, but I'll make a exception on this occassion, it really is that awesome... Believe.

5: Bastard Swordsmen
6: Bounty Killers II
7: Daughters Of Darkness
8: Goal
9: Hubba Hubba Hubba (What's In The Bag Man)

Something a bit different here, hope you like it. Depth Charge are/were a UK based trip hop/hip hop/dance/electronic band. Funky head bopping beats, mesmerizing loops and tastey samples fuel this instrumental album, leaving you spinning it again and again. The first song is loaded with old kung fu samples, the second samples from the Evil Dead films (which features some creepy loops and beats, very fitting to the film), and throughout the record we get treated to more samples from cowboy films, more kung fu films (some sounding like same the guy from classic kung fu epic Mafia vs Ninja, but who can tell from a dubbed film, right?), and football commentators. A bizarre mix, but it works all the same. Fans of DJ Shadow style instrumental hip hop, or cheesey old action/horror films will especially dig this.

Dave Heroes says: "You bastard, and now I'm going to do to you what you did to my father in the woods ten years ago" "Whats your name boy?" "I am Han-do Jin, Han-Wongs son"... I want to see this film.

5: Destroy The Dream
6: The Naked Face
7: Those Homophobic
8: Our Father
9: Show Me (Backing Vocals - Erica Christian)
10: Carnal Knowledge

Remember buying this on a sweet maroon vinyl from Depthcharge (RIP) when it came out - probably the main reason being it had a pair of vans on the cover and we were all skateboard dudes then. This LP is quite simply...awesome. Relatively unknown to most but an much loved fave among the Thirsk oldies. Polished, well produced - SoCal styled, tight and crunchy - this was a much more mature, evolved sound which offered a fresher take from the more chaotic, ever satuated, 80's sxe scene. Dan O'Mahoney's (NFAA/Carry Nation etc) distinctive vocals compliment the precision of Kevin Murphy's (Farside) foot-tapping riffage spot on. From the pacey and catchy a hell 'Destroy the Dream' to the more slower, more thoughtful 'Show Me' there's some good tunes going on here with power and integrity. Still got it, still listen to it, still look at the cover and think 'rad'.

3: Meaning

The UKs legendary Leatherface here, and a nice little taste of their melodic, gravely voiced, Husker Du style punk rock. The first song on here is Little White God, a nice cruncy tunefull punk rock number full of the catchiest guitar hooks ever. The single follows with two covers, 'I Gotta Right' originally by Iggy & The Stooges, and 'Meaning' which is a cover of the UKs China Drum...If you've not heard Leatherface before, this is the perfect little introduction to them, and if your already a fan hopefully this'll be something you not already got... 5: That Fucking Hurt

We all love a bit of Chopper, dont we? This was their second 7" on Crackle Records, and in my humble opinion, is probably their finest one. Chopper play ultra fast, ultra poppy, punk rock, kind of like Snuff meets The Descendents, and who wouldn't love that? Every single song on here is beyond awesome, but 'Volume' is one of my faves, about being in a band with yr mates, and has a way-too-catchy 'na na na' chorus that'll be stuck in yr head for weeks at a time. This is a must grab, and to quote nWo's Kevin Nash - "Its just too sweet".

Naked Raygun - Home 7" (1990)

Photobucket
Caroline Records

1: Home
2: Last Drink

Chicago based punk rockers Naked Raygun began life in the early 80s, playing working class hardcore punk, but by the time they released this, ten years later, and two years before they split up, they were becoming alot more melodic. This is a great 7", and ongreen vinyl too (not that a download can really capture that). The first song, Home, is like a more heavy American version of early Jam stuff, great melodic punk rock. Last Drink is the anthem to closing time, and stumbling out of the bar... "I Look into my empty glass, no money left, I'm drunk at last"... A real winner. Reminds me of old days of sitting in Shrimps old room, smoking hash and drinking...

This site would be incomplete without at least one entry by these guys. Operation Ivy were one of the bands that created the soundtrack to my teens, and still get played a whole ton today... This is a bit of a rare EP, their last official release, four songs that didnt make it onto the classic Energy album, but don't let that put you off, all four songs are great (and hell knows there's tons of terrible Op Ivy songs kicking around on bootlegs all over). You oughta know the Op Ivy sound, originators of ska-core, ska punk, call it what you will, these guys have a real rough punk edge to their ska sound, and match it with decent social/poltical lyrics. One of the best bands what ever happened, and thats no lie.

I think these guys were from Wakefield, and featured ex-Chopper Dan on Bass. Everybody knows Crackle was home to the best pop punk bands in the 90s, and this is testement to that. Dave Heroes Heroes (Part 2: Jon Curry)

Last night a friend of mine passed away in his sleep. His favourite band was Hawkwind, so it seems fitting to put a couple of their albums up in memory of him. Cardinal Jonathan Halton Curry, RIP.
Our thoughts & prayers go out to his loved ones, family & friends.

"Sneaked into his neighbours house last night and mixed butter into their 'I can't believe it's not butter!'. Now they don't know what to believe" - JC, Sept 28th

Dave Heroes says: Download the Hawkwind records, and play loud for Jon Curry...

CunninLynguists - A Peice Of Strange (2005)

Photobucket

1: Where Will You Be?
2: Since When?
3: Nothing To Give
4: Caved In (Ft. Cee-Lo Green)
5: Hourglass
6: Beautiful Girl
7: Inhale
8: Brain Cell
9: America Loves Gangsters
10: Never Know Why (Ft. Immortal Technique)
11: The Gates
12: Damnation
13: Hellfire
14: Remember Me (Abstract Reality)
15: What'll You Do?
16: The Light

More awesome-ness in the form of hip hop, this time from The CunninLynguists (awful name, but dont let that put you off)... Quite laid back, but head boppin' beats and smooth flows, and a nice album to blaze one up to. Features guest appearences by the likes of Cee-Lo Green, and one of our most favourite humans ever - Immortal Technique, so you know you should blag this just because he's on it... Most of the album has that kind of 'put yr feet up' vibe going on, but theres a couple of more energetic jumpers on here, like (my fave) 'Hellfire' - based on cut up loops from The Crazy World of Arthur Browns classic rock song 'Fire'... Another great hip hop record you may have passed over, so nows yr time to ch-ch-check it out...

Dave Heroes says: Its Sunday, burn one up and play this as the rain falls outside... Hmmm, yo, most satisfying.

GG Allin & The Criminal Quartet - Carnival Of Excess (2002)

Photobucket

1: Outskirts Of Life
2: Guns, Bitches, Brawls & Bottles
3: Carmelita
4: Watch Me Kill
5: Fuck Authority
6: Son Of Evil
7: Snakemans Dance
8: Pick Me Up (On Your Way Down)
9: No Rights
10: Borrowed Time

Recorded in 1991, but released in 2002, this is one of GGs finest, and most 'different' albums. Teaming up with The Criminal Quartet, the good lord GG Allin blesses us with a country/acoustic/punk rock cross over album. Of course, the usual 'push it to the limits' attitiude is present, but given its musical stylings its the kind of GG album that even those who aint GG fans will probably like - probably. Some real classic songs on here, and 'Outskirts Of Life', 'Watch Me Kill', 'Fuck Authority' and his cover of 'Carmelita' are amongst some of GGs finest moments. A must for all GG fans, fans of outlaw country & rebel music, or just fans of songs that'll piss your parents off.

Dave Heroes says: GG Allin, oh GG. Your small willy doesnt mean you're any less the man... RIP

KRS-One - U Must Learn UK (2006)

Photobucket

1: U Must Learn UK
2: U Must Learn (Instrumental)

The legendary KRS-One returns with a new version of his classic You Must Learn, only this time he's teaming up with UK hip hoppers MCD, Paradise, and one of the greatest ever UK MCs, and a firm favourite in these parts - Skinnyman! A great introduction to some of the best, and most politically/socially aware MCs from both sides of the Atlanic, doing what they do best. The B-side to this release is an instrumental version, so you can play kareokee with yr mates if you fancy it?

Dave Heroes says: Expect a lot more releases by these guys to appear on these pages in the near future...

Skimmer - Uncool EP (1996)

Photobucket
Crackle Records (1500 pressed in October 96 OUT OF PRINT)

1: Uncool
2: Hanging Out With No One
3: Unpunk
4: Sarahs Blanket

Another great little UK pop punk release from Crackle Records (home to Chopper, Toast, Servo and many more...). Skimmer play that Ramones style punk, but with a more poppy influence, vocal harmonies aplenty and bursting with caffine fuelled energy. All the tracks on this 7" are solid, and great in their own right, but for me 'Hanging Out With No One' is the stand out song, with a catchy chorus that'll stick in your head for days... Well worth checking out if yr a fan of pop punk, and see what was going on in the UK 15 years ago...

Dave Heroes says: Dumb fun punk rock from the UK, OK?

Chopper - Said And Done 7" (1994)

Photobucket
Crackle Records (1300 pressed in May 94 OUT OF PRINT)

1: Said And Done
2: Linzis Ceiling
3: Near To Me
4: Twister

Probably one of the first punk bands I ever saw, back when they opened for most decent US punk bands that played at the Duchess in Leeds during the mid-90s. Chopper hailed from Wakefield, and were a good mix of UK punkers Snuff, and US Punkers The Descendents. Fast paced, laced with harmonies, and just enough of a snotty attitide to keep it from being too clean and dorky. This was their first 7", on the mighty Crackle Records, they did another 3 7"s, a couple of split 7"s, and an album for them too. Not the best release they ever did, but a good place to see where they started from, and a great peice of UK pop punk history.

Dave Heroes says: The greatest UK pop punk band ever!

Guns N Wankers - Silly 7" (1994)

Photobucket

1: Guns N Wankers - Gillette
2: Guns N Wankers - Bing Bong
3: Solid Gold Hell - Valley Of Scorn
4: Chung - Flowers
5: David Kilgour - Fallaway

You might have Guns N Wankers 'Pop' & 'Hardcore' 7"s, and a few of you will have the 'Metal' 7", but this is a bit of a rare one. The 'Silly' 7" is actually just 2 Guns N Wankers tracks, plus 3 other bands doing a track each. G&Ws first one is a cover of the Gillette song (The best a man can get...), very much a Snuff track it is. Bing Bong is a punky blast, with a door bell - Silly really does some up both of their tracks, but both are good so who cares? The next track is by Solid Gold Hell, 'Valley of Scorn' is a noisey metal-ish number, and its a bit shit in all honesty. Chung are a bit better, they give us 'Flowers', which is a punky/indie pop track with sugar sweet female vocals. Finally we have David Kilgour with 'Fallaway' which is an acoustic indie pop song, ok if you like that kinda thing... Its worth it just to complete your Guns N Wankers collection, and Chung are pretty nice too...

Dave Heroes says: Guns N Wankers are ex-Snuff, so Snuff fans take note!

The Leftovers - A Few Days Difference 7" (1994)

Photobucket

1: Nothin Changes
2: Why?
3: The Things We Do
4: The Difference Of A Few Days...
5: URA Bitch And U Gotta Mustache

Quite a nice little EP this is, manic punky ska, with a singer who sounds like he's a cartoon. Dont let that put you off though, its goofy enough to fit the music. Not as generic or as uninteresting as thousands of other bands doing this kind of ska/punk mash up, musically in the same vein as the legendry Op Ivy, but the lyrics are a little more light hearted. If ska punk is yr thing, I'm sure you'll love this rare little beauty...

Dave Heroes says: Operation Ivys younger goofy brother?

Maniac Squat - Fuck Off 7" (1995)

Photobucket

1: Fuck Off
2: Hey Rude Boy

Apologies for the small pic, photobucket kept taking down our scan of the cover for violating their policies (can't imagine why?), so I had to blag this pic off the net... The first track on this single is a oi-ish punk rock track, with a 'fuck off' laden chorus. Immature, but fun none the less. Best played loud. The b-side is an instrumental ska track, nice and two-tone influenced, and I'm sure you'll love it.

Dave Heroes says: The first ever band to be interviewed in Thirsk zine 'My God Can Beat Up You God'...

8.Not Scientist
9.Armageddon at Eleven
10.Straw Bridge
11.Fuck Florida, I'm Moving to Brooklyn
12.Thanx
13.Janie Jones

My new favourite band. This album just totally rocks. Featuring members of New Mexican Disaster Squad this angry, snotty, pissed-off pop punk stuff is damn near perfect - imagine a fresher, tighter Dillinger 4 with the venom of Kid Dynamite and just a smidging of early Screeching Weasel and yer in da right area. "Not Scientists" is my stand-out track on here and "Burning Crosses" is class but the more you listen to the whole album the more it grows on yer like a long scraggy arse hair. You need this. Seriously, even if it's for the cool arsed artwork...

Artless - Beer / Crassdriver 7" (1990)

Photobucket

1: Beer Is Better... Than Girls Are
2: Crassdriver

One last upload before bed time, kiddies... This time its from MaximumRock&Roll columnist Mykal Board, who sings in this band. The first track is dumb punk rock, but its kinda funny too, explaining why beer is better than girls, "No matter how cunning her stunts, with a girl theres that time of the month"... The b-side is called Crassdriver, and takes the piss out of far-right and far-left punk bands (Skrewdriver & Crass namely), its kinda dumb, but kinda fun too "A hammer & sickle is just a swastika in drag"... A nice little blast from the past, worth checking out tod lad...

DeadBeat At Dawn - Just Before Dawn CD (2008)

Photobucket

1: Just Before Dawn
2: Rize Up
3: Wrong Turn (Feat Charlie W)
4: DeadBeat Wrecking Krew

From the ashes of Mafia Vs Ninja & BossEye, the Thirsk retards are at it again. More ska punk rap-core retardedness from the sexiest looking boys in town, and this time they only went to a proper studio and managed to sound like a real band... Four tracks of twisted punk rock, with hints of ska, rap, reggae, rock and Diztruxshun MC-ing from these old timers, still struggling to hold on to the glory days of their youth. With a fixation on low budget horror & apocalyptic films, hip hop & graffiti, and making idiots out of themselves, DeadBeat At Dawn are pretty much the perfect cup of tea for anyone, even yer nana.

Dave Heroes says: Poor lads, give em a chance from me...

Oh yes. What a corker! Remember taking a gamble on this and buying the LP from Record Mania in York circa 1990? These boys were probably the first hardcore punk band in history. Heard of Black Flag but not heard them so really wanted to check em out. A good intro to BF coz it's got all the early best stuff on it before Rollins came sniffing round with his fat neck and 2-bit tattoos. Keith Morris was, and always be, the best Black Flag vocalist but Ron Reyes comes a close second. Some classics on this such as "Jealous Again", "Wasted", "Police Story" and "Gimme Gimme Gimme" most with different versions by different vocalists - kinda like a Black Flag kareoke..Awesome artwork too. Why did I sell this? Am I stupid.......yes.

Dave Heroes Says: Punch Henry Rollins.

The Wailers - Burnin' LP (1973)

Photobucket

1: Get Up Stand Up
2: Hallelujah Time
3: I Shot The Sheriff
4: Burnin' & Lootin'
5: Put It On
6: Small Axe
7: Pass It On
8: Duppy Conqueror
9: One Foundation
10: Rastaman Chant

Bob Marley was a king amongst kings. One of the greatest ever song writers, and a true soul rebel. This, in my humble oppinion, is his greatest album. From the awesome cover onwards, its just flawless. All time classics 'I Shot The Sherif' and Dart Squad favourite 'Get Up Stand Up' are the most recognizable, but alongside them are the awesome politically charged 'Burnin & Lootin' and 'Small Axe', and love and spiritual journeys in 'One Foundation' & 'Hallelujah Time', plus the smoked up rasta blastas 'Rastaman Chant' & 'Duppy Conqueror'. Any fans of reggae, or rebel music, should already own this, but for those who don't already, here's yer chance... An absolute classic, one of the greatest albums ever...
I went to his old house t'other year on my hols to Jamaica... He wasn't in.

Snuff - Cubical 7" (1992)

Photobucket

1: Cubical
2: You Are My Sunshine
3: Den Den Moshi Moshi

Who doesnt love Snuff? Probably Hitler, and Simon Cowel, and thats it... Another pretty rare single here, all songs I think have appeared on other releases, but dfferent recordings of them... Cubical is, I think, a cover of 808 State? Another little beauty you probably would of never known existed....

13: Fallen Clown
14: Punks Went Dirthead
15: Assman
16: Fuck N Drink
17: Codpeice Nation
18: Liposuction

What can be said about this record, that cant be figured out from the cover? A suprising release for MaximumRock&Roll Records (mainly in that its good...), this is a pure-sleazy un-pc deprived perverted and down right stupid album, and its fucking awesome fun. Features the original 'Fuck N Drink' which yorkshire punk rockers Homebrew made famous with their version of it. Other songs cover hot topics such as cheese, loving asses, retards, peados, and more dumb stuiff. C'mon, you know the teenager in you will love this. And so will the teenager you're in...
